Why Are Refurbished Laptops Becoming More Popular?

23rd Apr 2025

Refurbished laptops are more popular than ever, but are they actually worth it?

As someone who's spent over a decade testing and selling refurbished laptops at Morgan Computers, I can confidently say the answer is yes. But, like anything tech-related, it depends on what you're buying and who you're buying it from.

What is a Refurbished Laptop?

Before we go any further, let's clarify what we mean by "refurbished laptop." It's not just a used laptop someone’s wiped down and passed on.

A true refurbished laptop is a pre-owned device that's been professionally tested, repaired (if needed), cleaned, and restored to full working order.

At Morgan Computers, this means going through rigorous multi-point inspections, replacing any faulty components, and doing a fresh software install so it's ready to go right out of the box.

We stock brands like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Apple, and others because these are machines built to last—and when they're properly refurbished, they’ve got loads of life left.

Cost – Do Refurbished Laptops Save You a Fortune? Yes!

Let’s face it folks, value for money matters now more than ever. That’s exactly why refurbished laptops have seen such a boom in popularity.

For many of us (myself included), the question isn’t just “Should I buy a new laptop?” – it’s more like, “Can I afford a new one?”

In the past, if you couldn’t afford new, your options were limited. Now, the rise of refurbished laptops means that same tight budget could still land you a well-performing, reliable device.

You can get a premium laptop that originally cost well over £2000 for under £500 refurbished. That’s not an exaggeration – we regularly refurbish and sell machines in that exact bracket.

If you want to stretch your budget and still get serious performance, refurbished is the way to go.

Are Refurbished Laptops Slow and Outdated? Absolutely Not.

Here’s the deal. When you’re trying to work out the value of a refurbished laptop, compare it to what you could get brand new for the same price point. The fact is that high-end models from a few years ago often outperform brand new budget models.

Technology continues to advance, but not in the leaps and bounds we used to see. Each new generation of laptops offers small improvements in processor speed and efficiency, but the performance gap between slightly older premium devices and new entry-level machines has narrowed massively.

Let me explain this using processors as an example. Here’s a real-world comparison using data from cpu.userbenchmark.com:

  • Intel Core i7-11700KF (2021) – High-end processor from a few years ago, now found in refurbished laptops

  • Intel Core i3-14100F (2024) – Budget processor found in some brand-new laptops today

Despite being 3 years older, the i7 still outperforms the newer i3 by around 5% in effective CPU speed. Once the laptop is overclocked (that’s where the laptop’s factory-set maximum clock speed is bumped up to make it even faster), that gap can grow to over 30% in benchmark tests.

So yes, newer doesn’t always mean better—especially if the newer model is built for budget performance and the older one was built for speed and power.

What if I buy a budget refurbished laptop?

If you’re on a very tight budget—say around £130—you might be looking at an older refurbished laptop. And yes, in my experience, it will likely be slower than it’s brand new counterpart simply.

When shopping at the lowest price point, you’re trading speed for budget – and that’s fair enough. It’s better to have a slow laptop that fits within your budget than nothing at all, right?

If you’re on the fence about whether a higher spec model is worth it, remember that a laptop is a long-term investment that you will get years of use out of. If you reky on it for study or work, it is probably worth splurging a bit for a higher spec model.

So no, refurbished laptops aren’t slow by default. You just need to know what you’re looking at – and that’s something we’re always happy to help with at Morgan Computers.

Are Refurbished Laptops Lower Quality? Definitely Not.

In fact, in many cases, they’re higher quality than a new laptop at the same price.

Let me explain.

Business-class laptops (the kind we often refurbish) are built to a higher spec than many consumer models. That means metal chassis instead of plastic, better keyboards, high quality motherboards, more durable hinges, and often longer lifespan components.

They were originally designed for high performance and everyday use in tough environments.

We refurbish laptops that were bought brand new for £2000, used for maybe 3 years, then sold to us to refurbish. They go through a thorough inspection, repair and clean before being sold to you for around £500.

If you compare our refurbished laptop to a brand new £500 model, ours is made from much more durable materials because it was such a premium model to begin with. In my experience, the refurbished model will last longer and perform better than the brand-new equivalent.

When you buy from a reputable refurbisher, you’re not just getting a second-hand device. You’re getting a premium model that’s been inspected, repaired, and cleaned to a professional standard.

Why Are Refurbished Laptops So Popular Right Now?

You could say it's a perfect storm. Here's what I think is driving the boom:

  • More environmentally conscious buying – people want to reduce e-waste.

  • Way more spec for less money – value is unbeatable.

  • Smarter shoppers – more of us are doing the research and realising "new" isn’t always better.

  • Warranties that match new – Morgan Computers offers 12 months on most laptops.

  • Tougher budgets – whether it’s students, businesses, or everyday users, saving money matters.

And let’s not forget: reliable doesn’t mean boring. Many of our refurb customers tell us their laptops look and feel brand new.

Do Refurbished Laptops Come With a Warranty? Yes, Ours Do.

This is a big one for trust, and rightly so.

When you buy a refurbished laptop from Morgan Computers, you’re not on your own. Almost all of our laptops come with a 12-month warranty, which means you’re covered for the same length of time as many new models. And if anything goes wrong, we’re a UK-based company, just a phone call away.

There’s also our returns policy. If it’s not right, you can send it back within 14 days. We want you to be 100% happy with your tech. It’s how we’ve done business since 1983.
