Our Specialist view of the Dell Latitude 5490 laptop

The Spec:

Windows 11 compatible with Windows 10 Pro preinstalled, the refurbished Dell Latitude 54940 is spec’d as follows: a decent sized 14 inch Full HD IPS (In-Plane Switching) display which makes the viewing experience even better. 8GB DDR4 memory is installed with a 128GB Solid State Drive. The usual refinements are present and include WiFi, a webcam, USB 3.0, USB Type C and HDMI connectivity as well as a backlit keyboard but there is a big difference with this laptop. An 8^th Gen processor and TPM 2.0 chip means a FREE upgrade to Windows 11 for the end user.

The Good Bits:

Stick with Windows 10 Professional, which is supplied as standard with the Dell 5490 or choose to upgrade to Microsoft’s latest offering, Windows 11. Because this laptop has both an 8^th Gen processor and a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM 2.0) chip, you won’t need to pay for it either. Ignoring the operating system upgrade for a while, its feature set is excellent. We’ve mentioned the processor, which is Quad Core, the DDR4 RAM, and fast SSD. Dell has also packed in a HD webcam, a backlit keyboard, HDMI & VGA for new and legacy equipment and USB Type C, all in a case that weighs little more than 2 kilos.

The Not So Good Bits:

Perhaps a bit more metal in the body to improve durability and a larger SSD so there is no reason to be too concerned with storage space from the get go would be good. Also, we aren’t quite sure who still uses the mouse curser ‘nipple’ over the touchpad anymore. It doesn’t cause any typing difficulties but come on Dell, just ditch it,

The Design:

Not super tough and durable but Dell still deliver a sleek design that fits most environments. The keyboard is also a nice surprise with responsive and well spaced keys plus a backlit if you find yourself working in poorly lit environments. Ports and well placed and plentiful, but this is what we expect from Dell.

Suitability:

A excellent all rounder with the ability to upgrade to Windows 11, this Dell Latitude 5490 shouts out to students.
